Rushes Log

http://georgfritz1.blogspot.co.uk/p/production.html

The rushes are shots that we did not end up on using within the final edit. The link above is from one of my group member's blog, Georg Fritz. Majority of the rushes are shots that contain protagonist Liam. The reason as to why my group and I cut one of the character out is due to consistency issues between props and room layout.

Character Development

After much deliberation, my group and I have come to the decision that 'New Term' character [LIAM] is no longer to be in the film. This is due to many factors that we had to deal with during the editing and development of our film.

Filming at different intervals and dates meant that certain group members were unable to film on specific dates. Liam was unable to attend any other filming days after Wednesday 12th February as he was due to go away on holiday. The majority of Liam's filming was not adequate. This was either due to the difference in prop layout within the room, the lighting or what was said by him when improvising rather than reading from the script.

One of the problems faced was the layout of props such as paperwork and folders. This was extremely noticeable to my group and I meaning it would have been noticeable to the audience as well. Moreover, Liam did not read the script word-by-word meaning that his head shots and the subjective filming from the Head of Sixth Form’s point of view did not make any sense when edited together.

Set Design

To make our film (‘New Term’) as realistic as possible to our 16 – 25 year old target audience, my group and I carefully considered what code and conventions are used within a film of the comedy genre and what is typically seen within the school environment. Office Stationary, labelled folders, paperwork and computer equipment are some of many items scene within a typical school. As well as this, we also noticed that senior staff had more of a personalised touch to their offices. For example, tea and coffee facilities, a mirror, coat hanger and an electric fan were some of the items that were within the office that my group and I filmed in.

After looking around Walmer Science College and the many possible locations to film our interviewing scenes in, my group and I all came to the conclusion that Mrs. Picken’s office was the place to carry out the filming. This was due to many reasons; this included the layout of the room following the 180 degree rule, the natural lighting coming through her windows into the room and the furniture following the codes and conventions of what is typically seen within the school environment. Moreover, the location of this set was easily accessible to my group and I as it was on our school site.

Here is a rough layout at a birds eye view of the office furniture and the room itself. This was created using Windows paint and Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation.

Rough Edit

http://georgfritz1.blogspot.co.uk/p/production.html

Here is the link to a rough copy of our comedic genre production, 'New Term'. The current quality of the video provided on George Fritz's blog is at 240p but the final edit will be at 1080p/ 720p quality overall. After reviewing the rough edit, I have taken notes on the positives and negatives. Allowing to reflect on what the rough edit has to offer means that my group and I can use our observational skills to identify what does not and does follow the codes and conventions of the comedy genre.

The end shot (featuring the final film title design) states that the production is a ‘Georg Fritz Production’. This implies that the overall amount of development including editing, filming and sound has been entirely completed by one individual rather than a group effort. In order to correct this mistake, my group and I will simply discuss if we should have a production company name and if so, what it shall be. Due to the film itself following the codes and conventions of the comedy genre, it would effective if the production company name was comical as well.

For example, ‘The Inbetweeners Movie’ was co-produced by Bwark TV. This informal company name shares the same level of formality as the film. Moreover, this is a memorable name as it’s an onomatopoeia for the noise a chicken which has no relation to film.
Also, two of the medium shots (one containing Georg, the other containing Dean) needs trimming on the left side in order for the film’s shots to flow fluently without jump cut shots.

The reason we do not intend on using any jump cuts within the film, is due to the film being set in one location as well as following an interview between potential student and Head of Sixth Form. Therefore, in order to make what the audience is witnessing seem realistic and relatable, the film will follow mostly shot reverse shots and the 180 degree rule.

The subtitles at the bottom of Georg’s shots (when he is talking German to the Head of Sixth Form) need to be more concise and equal in font size. This is because the irregularity of font size and subtitle placement in the shot, will be the dominant aspect within the scene and rather than the spectator noticing the characters facial expressions and the progression of narrative, they will ultimately be focussing on the uneven lettering.

This particular edit has given my group and I the opportunity to experiment with the use of split screen. Using the split screen means that it makes the introduction of each protagonsit less tediuos and to the point. Furthermore, it allows the audience to compare the physical diefferences between each individual as well.

Title Fonts

All of the above film titles are from films of the comedy genre. Codes and conventions of comedy genre have been followed my group and I.This means that 16-25 year olds are the target audience age range similar  we are aiming for.

Easy A – White, Black and Red.

She’s the man – White, Black and Red

10 things I hate about you – white, pink and black

American Pie – white and red

Mean girls – purple and pink

The Inbetweeners - black and white

The Inbetweeners

The juxtaposition between the white lettering and black background relates to the juxtaposition between the protagonists and their peers within the film. All of the lettering is lower case therefore, there is no dominant upper case lettering meaning that the characters have no power or dominance over anyone in their school environment. Furthermore, the colour white symbolises youth whereas the colour black symbolises detachment. Through the use of colour, this further adds to the audiences understanding of the protagonists and how they are detached from the social sphere within their school.

This relates to our film ‘New Term’. Because the two protagonists are unorthodox due to their stereotypes, they have no acceptance in their new and unfamiliar environment meaning that none of their peers acknowledge anything they have to say therefore they ultimately have no dominance.

Mean Girls

The acceptance of the new student within this film is highlighted through the use of colours within the film titles. Purple within film symbolises royalty therefore, this shows how the popularity of certain individuals within the school makes them almost school royalty amongst their peers; although what is popular isn’t always right. Furthermore, the acceptance of the new student within the film is highlighted through the colour pink. The fade from purple to pink gives an understanding of the transition or journey the main protagonists goes through in order to fit in with the ordinary as well as the idea that in order to be accepted, you must be yourself.

This relates to our film in the way the characters are similarly treated. Even though the characters in our film are likable and have the right intentions, their exterior and verbal differences change people’s perception of them.

10 things I hate about you

The term ‘hate’ is a strong descriptive word for something that is disliked very much therefore, from the title it can be presumed that the comedy genre film carries a satirical approach towards adolescent life in school. The colour black symbolises anger yet the pink symbolises love. The juxtaposition between love and hate adds a further understanding into attitudes towards education; some love to learn, others hate it.

This relates to our film in the way that our protagonists are eager to join a prestigious sixth form therefore, apply and attend an interview to discuss their potential future with the school; the audience do not see for themselves if the hopeful students are accepted as we cut to the film tiles leaving the audience on a cliff-hanger eager to know more.

American Pie

The colour white symbolises youth whereas the colour red symbolises love. This goes hand in hand with the word ‘American’ which suggests that the film is patriotic and that the characters in the film share a love for the country they live in.This relates to the characters in our film. Each character wears stereotypical clothing that is associated with the country because they are proud to show their heritage. For example, DEAN wears a tartan print kilt whereas GEORG wears an outfit that is inspired by lederhosens.

Filming Location

Throughout the narrative, the short film will be filmed within Castle Community College and Walmer Science College.

Walmer Science College
Salisbury Road
Walmer
Deal
Kent

All filming will be on Walmer College site. All interviewing scenes will be filmed in the same office either at Walmer. The audience is introduced to each protagonist outside the front entrance of the school whereas, the audience are introduced to the head of Sixth Form in his office. The reason we have chosen to film at this school is because, filming in the school environment gives a greater understanding into the narrative. Moreover, following the codes and conventions of comedy genre film, we wanted to use natural lighting and correct mise-en-scene (school folders, computers, chairs etc.) to make the story even more realistic as if the audience have an insight into something real.

Script Treatment

Film Title - 'New Term'

Location - Castle Community College and Walmer Science College

Film Budget - N/A

Filming Duration - January, February and March 2014

Directors - Georg Fritz, Liam Cador and Rosie Lines

Cast - Georg Fritz, Liam Cador, Dan Pennington and Dean Fisher

BBFC Rating – 15

'New Term' is a comedic short film set in the modern day revolving around three individual protagonists all hoping to receive and obtain a place at a very prestigious Sixth Form. Each character represents a specific country based purely on stereotypes; not necessarily positive ones either.
Simply through mise-en-scene that follows the codes and conventions of the comedy genre such as costume, character and dialect, the spectator gains greater knowledge into the narrative and its genre. Moreover, the spectator is able to see for themselves the individuality each character possesses and the juxtaposition between each character.
The three protagonists are seen walking towards their new and unfamiliar environment all approaching the school in their own individual way. [GEORG] eagerly walks towards the school with camera in hand, [DEAN] has a strong, upright walk hoping to prove he is a  responsible and mature individual whereas, [LIAM] strides along with broadsheet newspaper in hand as if where he is about to go is below him and that he is more superior.
[LIAM] wears a formal suit which consists of a formal grey suit jacket, grey suit trousers, black brogues and a flat-cap. Suits are stereotypically worn to give a sense of formality and class [LIAM]’s character wears his suit satirically.

[GEORG]’s costume has been assembled to show his family’s German Heritage. Stereotypically, Lauderhousens are worn regularly by German so this will be an influencing factor in the overall appearance of his costume. [GEORG]'s costume consists of a red checked shirt, Brown above-the-knee shorts, Brown braces, Brown boots and Brown rucksack.

[DEAN] has Scottish Heritage within his family therefore, we wanted to present this through his costume. Stereotypical Scottish clothing is tartan print and kilts; so by combining the two together and having [DEAN] wear tartan print kilt as well as a cream coloured cable knit jumper and black boots.

The audience then see the three characters entering the main school office. After entering the office, each character is given the task of finding their way to the Head of Sixth Form’s office where they are required to sit patiently outside. Through a medium close-up of all three protagonists sat together, the audience is able to see how each character regards one another as a potential threat for possibly not receiving a place at Walmer Castle Sixth Form.

The Head of Sixth Form requests candidates one-by-one to come into his office and then proceeds to formally introduce himself. [DEAN] makes his presence know by being loud and shaking the Head of Sixth Form’s hand quite vigorously, [GEORG] (eager to document down all that is around), decides to take a photograph of the Head before shaking his hand and [LIAM] holds out his hand but then decides to just shake two of the Head’s fingers. This further adds to the audience’s understanding of [LIAM] thinking he is more superior.

After this, the Head of Sixth Form kindly requests that the candidate takes a seat on the chair located in front of his desk. The distance between the two characters is a public distance therefore, character stance is quite formal and detached much like the Head of Sixth Form’s attitude within his work place.

The Head of Sixth Form then asks the three potential students the same set of questions in order to have a better understanding into what their intentions are for the future, their hobbies and their attitudes towards learning. All of these shots will be shot/reverse shots at either a medium close-up.

After asking the necessary questions, each student will shake the Head of Sixth Form’s hand again and leave the office. Ending the film after each candidate has left the office, leaves the narrative on a cliff-hanger therefore, this makes the spectator curious as to what happens next.

Overall, the narrative revolves around how appearance especially within adolescent environments, makes individuals pre-judge. Moreover, the idea that we live in a decadent and materialistic age is also highlighted within ‘New Term’. For example, the fact that each of the protagonists are judged by what they are wearing rather than their personalities highlights how we are too focus on our image and how certain clothing labels reward us with a certain status amongst our peers.

Liam - Costume

Here is the character clothing for character 'Liam'. After establishing where 'New Term'  is due to be filmed (Castle Community College and Walmer Science College) my group and I realised that to make the narrative and character's seem more believable, the clothing worn had to fit in with the surroundings of the narrative and reflect the persona of each protagonist; the theme of 'Sixth Form environment' had to apply to what the character would be wearing as well as their stereotype.

For example, my group and I chose this particular character to wear a formal suit. This consists of a long sleeved white shirt, black tie, black suit jacket, black fitted office trousers and black brogues. The reason we have chosen to have 'Liam' wearing this is because within the short film, there are subtle elements of stereotyping. The use of the formal suit being worn by someone in their adolescents implies that, Liam has had a wealthy upbringing and finds it perfectly necessary to present himself like this regularly.

Moreover, the use of juxtaposing colours within the suit (white and black) are a visual metaphor for how juxtaposing the personalities the three protagonists possess are.
Furthermore, props such as a simple black bag gives the spectator a better understanding into the idea of my character being organised.

George - Costume

Here is the character clothing for character 'George'.

For example, my group and I chose this particular character to wear clothing that was loosely based upon where he originates from; George's outfit is based upon German Laderhousens. This consists of a long sleeved checked shirt, brown braces, brown above-the-knee shorts and brown work boots .The reason we have chosen to have 'George' wearing this is because, within the short film there are subtle elements of stereotyping.

The use of the laderhousens being worn by someone in their adolescents implies that George is proud of his German heritage and allows it to influence his clothing chose. Moreover, the character's outfit is noticeably different to the other protagonists similarly to his accent which is noticeably German.

Dean - Costume

Here is the character clothing for character 'Dean'. Script Treatment Overview

Narrative Overview

The narrative follows three young boys all wanting to receive a place at a very prestigious Sixth Form. Each individual character is entirely based upon the heavy stereotyping of the country they originate from.

Yet the boys are immediately regarded as outcasts in their new and unfamiliar school environment due to their physical and verbal differences. Due to this, the bond between each of the three boys unintentionally becomes stronger.

Setting

Because the narrative revolves around three new students receiving a placement at Sixth Form, all filming will take place within a school environment. This gives the audience a better understanding and greater knowledge into the plot and the journey of each protagonist.
